Fasting: Why Do We Fast?

Fasting is a way to step away from worldly distractions and set our hearts and minds fully on God. It’s not about trying to earn God’s favor or force His hand — it’s about humbly acknowledging how dependent we are on Him for every need.

Fasting helps us recognize how easily our desires and appetites pull us away from God, and it clears space for prayer, reflection, and time in His Word. It quiets the noise around us and amplifies God’s voice, helping us focus more fully on the hope and victory of the life, death, and resurrection of Christ.

Matthew 6:16-18 – “When you fast…”

Jesus assumed His followers would fast. He didn’t say if but when. Fasting is about creating space for more of Him. When we fast, we voluntarily set aside something good—like food, entertainment, or distractions—to focus more fully on our relationship with Christ.

Whether you fast from food, technology, or another comfort, the goal is the same — to humbly seek God’s face, listen for His leading, and draw near to Him as we prepare our hearts for the cross and the empty tomb.

Fasting can take many forms. Here’s what it could look like for you:

  1. Skipping one meal a day and using that time to pray

  2. Fasting from TV, social media, or unnecessary phone use to focus on God’s Word

  3. Giving up coffee, soda, or sweets as a reminder to hunger for God
